Understanding The artiste!!!

How often do you start to work on an artistes music project and the artiste suddenly begins to loose interest in the production entirely. You would wonder but not show it; "is there something you are doing wrong?...why don't the artiste just mention it?" Most times these artistes are beginners and do not know much about production, so they don't even know how to assist in achieving a "HIT" song. so they just groan under their breath when things aren't sounding as expected.

As a producer and Sound engineer you need to connect with such artiste. You need to ensure that the artiste is with you all the way. The session should be treated like a factory and the the song about to be produced is the product being manufactured. Your artiste is a member of staff. You need to explain every step of the production to him; help the artiste understand that you can not achieve it without his/her full attention and creativity. You need ideas to be contributed. They need to be certain that you are open to suggestions.

Engage them in the choice of tones, rhythm, tempo and of course, genre. Discuss the reason why you would prefer a particular tempo other than the one they selected. This way they are also learning and you will be considered a very patient and accommodating producer. Artistes will surely begin to be more involved in the production actively. 

So the next time you are in the recording studio with an artiste, don't forget to make them understand that you are always ready to adjust and go by their pace. Tell them you need to hear their opinions as the production progresses.
